One of our experienced specialist dentists will meet you for your consultation. You’ll be able to discuss what ideally you would like to achieve and we’ll provide you with all the information you need about which treatment options are available to you. Implants require several appointments and this will all be explained to you. |
|
We will listen to you and get to know your concerns and expectations. Then we carry out a thorough examination which includes examining your head and neck for any abnormalities before we examine your teeth and mouth. Finally, we then conduct a special investigation using the latest technology CT scan (3D digital scan) to assess your bone quality and volume available for implants placement. |
|
Our Specialist dentist at Gosforth Dental Surgery will then discuss these with you and we’ll provide you with a detailed treatment plan which will outline exactly what the treatment will involve, how long the treatment will take and what costs are involved. Once you are completely happy with the plan, we’ll book an appointment for treatment. |
|
We will make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment and will use a normal anaesthetic. You may experience tenderness for a few days which will quickly disappear. You shouldn’t need to take any time off work unless your procedure is more surgically advanced. |
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is placed into the jaw to replace natural teeth lost due to tooth decay, gum disease, or injury. The implant consists of a titanium post that acts as a tooth root and is surgically fitted into the jaw. After a short healing time “Osseo-integration”, the implant fuses with the bone to provide a stable foundation anchor for a single tooth or several teeth. The new teeth are recreated to both look and feel like your own teeth and these are fixed to the implant to provide you with normal functionality of your mouth and completely natural looking replacement teeth.
Anyone who has lost part of or a whole tooth, or fractured a tooth, or not happy with their dentures can see one of our specialist dentists trained to discuss the options to replace the missing teeth. So, if you are concerned about having missing teeth or losing a tooth, your dentist at Gosforth Dental Surgery can take a look and advise you on the best options to have natural looking teeth.
Implants are not appropriate for children or young adults as facial bone growth is incomplete. Usually, therefore, the minimum age is 18 for a dental implant treatment. There is no upper age limit with patients in their seventies, eighties or older often choosing to have implants.
The oral hygiene can affect the success of the implants; the gum condition and bone tissue quality may present risk to the patient. There are other factors that may reduce the chances of implants success such as; excessive smoking because it deters healing, high alcohol consumption that affects the gums, advanced gum and bone tissue deterioration from periodontal disease, patients with auto-immune disease that also affects healing-rate and fusion of the implant to the bone. At our Newcastle Dental Practice, one of our specialists will examine your mouth to assess your suitability for dental implants.
Missing teeth can affect your bite because the remaining teeth are exposed to extra forces. Over time, the jaw bone shrinks and can appear distorted which can affect the shape of your face. If you are concerned about this, get in touch with our team at Gosforth Dental Surgery and one of our specialist dentists can discuss your concerns with you and advise you on the condition of your teeth.
At Gosforth Dental Surgery, we are privileged to have Mr Moustafa (Specialist Prosthodontist) in our team. Prosthodontics is one of the 13 official dental specialities recognised by the General Dental Council. It is the speciality of restoring natural teeth and creating and placing natural-looking substitute or prosthetic teeth.
A Prosthodontist is a specialist dentist who has spent an additional 3 years in full-time study. Prosthodontists are trained to restore your mouth comprehensively using specialist knowledge and skills together with the latest techniques and modern materials.
Their aim is to get your mouth fully restored to optimal function and appearance and in so doing, help you to maintain your teeth for as long as possible and reduce the need for future dental treatment.
Services falling under the expertise of a Prosthodontist include:
A dental implant provides several advantages over other tooth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like a natural tooth, a dental implant replaces teeth without sacrificing the health of neighbouring teeth. Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, as a result they help to keep the bone healthy and intact. The loss of bone that follows tooth loss leads to recession of the jawbone and a collapsed, unattractive smile.
After the treatment, you will have a full set of natural looking teeth again, your bone tissue and jaw structure will be much stronger, you will have much better oral and overall wellbeing. You will also feel a lot more confident when you smile.
If you are missing just one natural tooth, then you will need one implant to replace the missing tooth. Larger spaces created by two, three or more missing teeth do not necessarily need one implant per tooth. However, the exact number of implants will depend upon the volume and quality of bone at each potential implant site.
At your implant assessment consultation in our Newcastle Dental Practice, your mouth will first be examined, and then appropriate x-rays, models and photographs taken. If implants are appropriate, your dentist will provide you a full treatment plan together with an estimate of the costs of providing the treatment.
We will make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment and will use a normal anaesthetic. We’ll then place the titanium dental implant into a pre-drilled hole. The gums will be closed up again using soft sutures which will be removed after 10 days. We’ll then leave the area to heal for 8-12 weeks.
After complete healing, the surface of the gum is opened again to allow for fitting of a temporary crown post to the implant (known as abutment).
More healing occurs over another month as the mouth gets used to the “new natural tooth or teeth”, and then the permanent crown or bridge is fitted. The crown or bridge looks like a natural tooth while the implant is hidden out of sight beneath the gum.
A CT scan will be carried out after your implant consultation to assess the volume of the bone. In many cases where there is enough bone to support the implant, bone graft will not be needed. If the CT scan showed a reduced bone volume, our dentist at Gosforth Dental surgery will discuss with you the bone grafting procedure and options. Most of the time the bone graft is performed at the same time of the implant placement to avoid you having two surgeries.
We will make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment and will use a normal anaesthetic. Some of our more nervous patients choose to have sedation. You will not feel pain during or shortly after the procedure. As the anaesthetic wears off, you may feel some discomfort, and while the implants are healing, there may be some inflammation and tenderness. You may experience a little swelling for a few days which will quickly disappear. As part of your treatment plan, your dentist at our Newcastle dental practice will discuss with you how to reduce and treat any discomfort or tenderness.
