Dental Crowns

Protect broken down teeth and restore them to their former appearance with our porcelain dental crowns.

A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a restoration that is placed over a cracked, broken, root filled, or heavily filled tooth. This is to protect the tooth against fracture. Dental crowns are similar in shape and shade to dental veneers except that crowns cover all the surfaces of a tooth, whereas veneers only cover the visible surface.

Inlays are similar to fillings and are usually porcelain fillings that are then bonded to the cavity. On the other hand, Inlays restore the biting surfaces of a tooth. They are used when more of your tooth is damaged or when we need to change its shape or position.

At Gosforth Dental Surgery we use the latest advances in porcelain which allows light to transmit through the crown, thereby creating a restoration that is undetectable from the other natural teeth in your smile. With the absence of any metal core on the inside of the crown, there will be no more grey lines that are usually seen with the older metal ceramic crowns.

Dental crowns process

Firstly, we try to understand your aims from having crowns and discuss your ideal smile. Your dentist at Gosforth Dental Surgery will take some X-rays and photographs of your teeth to ensure a very natural result.

During your visit to our Newcastle Dental Practice, the teeth are prepared to make room for their crowns. A mould is taken of this area and then used to create the crowns. At this stage, we’ll also determine the right shade for your crown and you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown to wear until your new one is ready.

The last visit will involve removing the temporary crown and fitting the new one. Your dentist at Gosforth Dental Surgery will check the fit and bite and make any necessary adjustments. Once we’re happy it fits well and delivers a good bite, we’ll cement it into place and you walk out a new you.

Types of dental crowns

All ceramic crown

All ceramic crowns have no grey metal inside. Therefore, they are often used for the visible front teeth. There will be no grey metal margin on show.

Metal ceramic crown

These crowns have a metal core on the inside and porcelain bonded to the outside. Metal ceramic crowns are usually used on back teeth.

All zirconia crowns

These crowns look white/yellow in colour and are usually used for back teeth. They have no porcelain, so the risk of fracture is less. These crowns need minimal drilling.

Gold crowns

These crowns are the strongest crowns available. They are usually used for back teeth. Gold crowns need minimal tooth reduction.

Frequently asked questions

At Gosforth Dental Surgery, your dentist will address both the aesthetic and functional needs in the treatment plan. Crowns are recommended as part of your treatment plan to restore teeth that have:

  • Undergone root canal treatment
  • Been heavily restored
  • Severe tooth surface loss
  • Poor aesthetic appearance
  • Replace existing crowns with poor appearance

If you want a dental crown to resemble your natural teeth, then ceramic crowns will meet this requirement. Porcelain crowns can also be designed with metal alloys. Crowns made from different materials will also have varied life-spans in durability, so this is also a factor to consider. Information on the different types of crowns and what will be a better fit for you can be discussed during your consultation at our Newcastle dental practice with your dentist.

Crowns are extremely useful for strengthening teeth which have been weakened by large fillings, cracks, and other damage. However, they do involve grinding down the tooth to accommodate the crown so looking forward, that tooth is always going to need a crown. If a patient is purely seeking a cosmetic improvement to otherwise healthy strong teeth, then your dentist at Gosforth Dental Surgery will recommend dental bonding or veneers may be a better option.

The average life span of a crown is ten years, provided you continue to take good care of your oral hygiene. Regularly cleaning your teeth and gums will reduce the risk of damage from tooth decay and ensure healthy tooth structure. We do recommend a regular dental hygienist appointment to ensure longevity in your treatment. If you are a registered patient at Gosforth Dental Surgery, it is quick and easy to make regular appointments with one of our experienced dental hygienists at our Newcastle Dental Practice.
