Partial Dentures

Our comfortable partial dentures fix a broken smile.

Missing teeth can make you appear older than your age, because they create gaps in your smile and can cause your cheeks to sag. But they also make chewing and talking much more difficult. Partial dentures can fix this, by replacing a single tooth or several teeth with a removable replacement. Modern day dentures can be made to look just like your old teeth and are much more comfortable than they used to be.

At Gosforth Dental Surgery, we are experts in dentures. Our specialist prosthodontist will be able to advise which type of denture will be best for you, and ensure they are both comfortable and natural looking.

Partial Dentures in Newcastle

What is a partial denture?

A denture is a removable prosthetic device that replaces missing teeth and adjacent tissues, multiple missing teeth or a full arch of teeth. At our Dental Practice in Newcastle, we use the latest technologies available for dentures. There are several options available for dentures such as standard acrylic “plastic”, chrome “metal” and Nylon “Flexible” dentures. Your dentist will suggest the most appropriate denture after an initial consultation.

Benefits of partial dentures

  • Dentures preventing your remaining teeth from tilting and moving
  • Restore your smile and general appearance
  • Improve your speech
  • Make eating a more comfortable and enjoyable experience
  • They are also easy to clean and repair
  • They usually require no surgery or invasive procedures

Types of partial dentures

Every partial denture is handcrafted to each patient’s requirements. We select and place your denture teeth onto its base to match the shape and size and character of the teeth that you have lost. There are three main types of partial dentures:

Acrylic “plastic” dentures

At Gosforth Dental Surgery, our plastic partial dentures are generally made from an ultramodern acrylic material which is high-strength and durable. If you look after the dentures, then this material is unlikely to stain or darken and will remain fresh and natural looking for many years. We generally design these with small clips (known as clasps) which grip the surrounding teeth and hold a partial denture in place.

Plastic partial dentures might be the most suitable option for you if you are about to lose your teeth and you need a partial denture to offer a quick and immediate solution.

Chrome “metal” dentures

Cobalt chrome dentures are a metal base denture with higher dimensional stability than acrylic dentures, they are thinner and stronger than conventional acrylic dentures due to this they feel less intrusive and easier to adapt to. The acrylic part is connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. At our Newcastle Dental Practice, your dentist can design a window in the metal framework for you so that you can still feel and taste food through the roof of your mouth.

Metal partial dentures might be the most suitable option for you if you struggled before with bulky dentures covering the roof of your mouth. They also make eating food a more enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Nylon “flexible” dentures

Designed from flexible and unbreakable resin, the latest flexible dentures offer a more comfortable fit when compared to more rigid plastic dentures. The reason for this is that flexible dentures adjust to any irregularities and shape changes in the mouth. With the absence of any metal frame and using super-thin, but ultra-strong materials, there is no bulky feeling and they blend in much better with your gums.

At Gosforth Dental Surgery, we offer the option flexible dentures for patients who cannot accommodate acrylic dentures and don’t want to wear metal dentures.

The partial denture process

Before you have a partial denture made you will need to have an examination with one of our dentists at Gosforth Dental Surgery. Your dentist will first diagnose and treat any oral health issues and see if dentures are suitable for you, then all the types of partial dentures will be discussed with you to choose the most suitable one.

When your mouth is ready, we take a mould of your teeth using a special dental putty and use this to make your new dentures. At our Newcastle Dental Practice, we always plan the case and work with a Clinical Dental Technician, who will construct your new partial denture.

When your new dentures are ready, your dentist will make sure they are a good fit and your smile is restored.

Frequently asked questions

Anyone who has lost a tooth, or a few teeth can consider partial dentures as a replacement option. Those who have incurred mouth injury as a result of an accident or sport may have lost teeth and need to consider restoration. People with gum disease may need teeth extracting, and dentures with or without implants can be the ideal solution for replacing their missing teeth.

Our dentist at Gosforth Dental Surgery will examine your teeth and do necessary X-ray and scans beforehand to make sure that the dentures are right for you. If dentures are recommended, your teeth and gums are first treated to make sure that they are in optimum health before a mould is taken and dentures designed to comfortably fit the structure and contours of your gums and jaws. A dental technician then fabricates the dentures according to the specifications provided by our resident dentist. When your dentures are ready, your dentist will contact you for an appointment to fit your new teeth.

No, all types of dentures can be made without any injections or drilling. The only time that dentures can give discomfort is when they are not fitted properly and irritate the gums and teeth. It is important to correct this so that the dentures comfortably fit your mouth to avoid developing gum disease from inflamed and bleeding gums. In our Newcastle Dental Practice, your dentist will ensure your dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth and will advise you on how best to care for your dentures.

At Gosforth Dental Surgery, every partial denture is handcrafted to each patient’s requirements. We select and place your denture teeth onto its base to match the shape and size and character of the teeth that you have lost. Your dentist can arrange a try in appointment so that you can see how your final dentures will look and even try them.

It is down to precise design to ensure that these clasps or clips are minimal and whenever possible are not seen. If we feel that the metal might show, we will offer you resin clasps that match your existing tooth colour. During your initial consultation at our Newcastle Dental Practice, your dentist will show you examples of each type of denture and clasp so that you can choose the most suitable for you.

After dentures are fitted, your mind needs to get used to the sensations of having new substitute teeth put in place and this can take anywhere from four to eight weeks. Some reported sensations are a feeling of bulkiness in the mouth, or excess saliva and that the front lip is protruding. As you naturally get used to wearing the dentures over the weeks, all of these sensations will subside because you resume greater control over your new set of teeth. If you are not sure that you can tolerate partial dentures, you can speak to our dentist at Gosforth Dental Surgery who can also adjust them slightly for you if needed. Eating and speaking may feel a challenge at first, because of the time your mind is taking to adjust to the new teeth and develop better response. Soon you will feel as if they are the teeth you have always had, and you will feel much better about the quality of your appearance and smile.

Your gums need time to rest with healthy saliva flow, so it is recommended to remove your dentures at night before going to sleep.

One of the most common reasons that people break their dentures is when they drop them in the sink. We therefore always recommend that whenever you clean your dentures it is a good idea to fill the sink with a couple of inches of water. Then if you accidentally drop your dentures they will fall into water and not onto a hard ceramic sink. Brush them as you would teeth and place them in a chilled glass of water to soak overnight. At Gosforth Dental Surgery, your dentist will give you denture cleaning tablets to ensure that the biofilm layer is removed adequately at the end of each day and so will keep your denture feeling fresh and new for many years.

Other alternatives to partial dentures include dental implants and bridges. When visiting our dental practice in Newcastle, your dentist will advise you on the treatment option appropriate for you.
