Fissure sealants treatment is very straightforward and quick and there is absolutely no pain involved. Before the sealant is applied, the tooth will be cleaned thoroughly and any food debris will be removed. A bonding solution is then applied to the tooth to help the sealant to stick. The sealant is then placed on the tooth and a powerful light source is used to set it firm. Sealants should last for a few years and they can be replaced. Sealants are often applied as soon as the permanent teeth start to come through. This is usually between 6 and 7 years of age. The rest are usually sealed as soon as they appear which can be any time between 11 and 14 years of age. During your check up at Gosforth Dental Surgery, your dentist will assess your risk of developing decay and will advise you about the best time to have the fissure sealant treatment.
Sealants usually last for many years, but your dentist at our Newcastle Dental Practice will want to check them regularly to make sure that the seal is still intact. They can wear over time, and sometimes the dentist needs to add or replace some sealant to be sure that no decay can start underneath them.
